At the 2025 Zagreb Championships, Iran’s freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling teams made history by simultaneously winning the world titles for the first time, collecting a total of 15 gold, silver and bronze medals. The Iranian freestyle team returned to the top of the world after 11 years, while the Greco-Roman team captured its title just a day later. Such an achievement – one nation sweeping both freestyle and Greco-Roman world championships at the same time – is a rarity in the history of the sport.
This success reflects the nation’s identity, the spirit of chivalry and the social solidarity of Iranians. Wrestling in Iran has ancient roots and has long been recognised in zurkhaneh (traditional gymnasiums) and heroic rituals as a national and traditional sport. It is not only Iran’s leading sport but also part of the country’s collective memory and cultural identity, where wrestlers, alongside physical strength, have embodied ethics, generosity and humility as role models for society.
This championship embodies the perseverance, unity and moral values that Iranian wrestlers demonstrate on the mat. In a symbolic gesture, several medallists of the recent competitions dedicated their medals to the martyrs of the “12-Day Imposed War of Israel and the United States” – an act underscoring the link between sport and human and national ideals.
This unprecedented achievement shows that wrestling remains Iran’s foremost sport and can, through ethics, perseverance and solidarity; raise the national flag on the highest podiums of the world.
I hereby extend my sincerest congratulations to Iran’s sporting community, the families of the wrestlers, the coaching and technical staff, and the wrestling-loving people of Iran for this great championship. These accomplishments reflect extra effort, continuous training, smart management and solidarity among the wrestlers and all those involved. I hope this success will mark the beginning of a new era of achievements and brilliance for Iranian wrestling and other sports.
